The TV broadcast “Kulturplatz” from November 30, 2024 reports on the decline of department stores in Switzerland. Jelmoli in particular is in the foreground. It has a similar significance in Zurich as the KaDeWe in Berlin. The article contains a historical outline, interviews with those affected, and reports on the film “Jelmoli – Biography of a Department Store” by filmmaker Sabine Gisiger. Another very interesting report in the program deals with the shop windows of large department stores as art spaces. Many an artist has started his career as a shop window designer, e.g. the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Today, young artists in particular use shop windows for their art activities.
