The former Schocken department store in Chemnitz is not only home to the State Museum of Archaeology. The bay windows of the building house three exhibitions on the old Schocken department store spread over three floors: on the founder Salman Schocken, on the Schocken Group, and on Erich Mendelsohn as the architect of the Schocken department stores. The exhibition runs parallel to the window façade. Along the windows, a timeline with important dates and historical events in all three exhibitions provides chronological orientation. The exhibition is visually very appealing. Even though it is heavy on text and images, visitors do not feel overwhelmed with information. These exhibitions demonstrate how the old department stores can be impressively presented with a manageable number of exhibits. This should serve as a shining example for Stralsund’s efforts to appropriately present the Wertheim and Tietz department stores as part of the city’s history in a museum setting.
