On May 5, 2026, the Ostsee Zeitung reported that the STRALSUND MUSEUM’s new permanent exhibition will cover the period from 4000 B.C. to 1814. The Wertheim and Tietz families’ retail businesses were established only later. The brothers Abraham and Theodor Wertheim opened their “Manufacturing and Fashion Goods Store” on April 15, 1852. Leonhard Tietz did not take over the firm “Winkelmann Nachfolger” at Wasserstraße 14 until 1876, together with a school friend from Birnbaum, and then opened his own store at Ossenreyerstraße 31 on August 14, 1879, together with his wife Flora. The fact that Stralsund can be considered the birthplace of German department store culture is thus not immediately apparent in the STRALSUND MUSEUM. However, there were already plans to feature Stralsund’s historic department stores in a special exhibition. In this regard, we are pleased that Dr. Heun, the director of the STRALSUND MUSEUM, is offering the opportunity to contribute to additions to the new permanent exhibition through an “open process.” Our association is happy to participate in this. We also see this as an opportunity to continue our long-standing successful collaboration with the STRALSUND MUSEUM, for example, for the previous exhibition “140 Years of Leonhard Tietz in Stralsund” at the Museum House.
